چکیده

We address the problem of the apparently very small magnitude of CP violation in the standard model, measured by the Jarlskog invariant J . In order to make statements about probabilities for certain values of J , we seek to find a natural measure on the space of Kobayashi-Maskawa matrices, the double quotient U(1)\SU(3)/U(1). We review several possible, geometrically motivated choices of the measure, and compute expectation values for powers of J for these measures. We find that different choices of the measure generically make the observed magnitude of CP violation appear finely tuned. Since the quark masses and the mixing angles are determined by the same set of Yukawa couplings, we then do a second calculation in which we take the known quark mass hierarchy into account. We construct the simplest measure on the space of 3×3 Hermitian matrices which reproduces this known hierarchy. Calculating expectation values for powers of J in this second approach, we find that values of J close to the observed value are now rather likely, and there does not seem to be any fine tuning. Our results suggest that the choice of Kobayashi-Maskawa angles is closely linked to the observed mass hierarchy. We close by discussing the corresponding case of neutrinos. In Pursuit of Gamma

After reviewing techniques for extracting clean information on CP-violating phase angles from B decays, we explain the rules for finding decay modes that can probe the phase angle γ of the unitarity triangle. We identify the more promising of these " γ modes, " estimate their branching ratios, and examine the degree to which they are theoretically clean. We then show that when the quark mixing ...

Constraints on mirror fermion mixing angles from anomalous magnetic moment data

The new contributions to the electron (muon) anomalous magnetic moment arising in mirror fermion theories have been calculated. Imposing the experimental constraint lowers the current upper bound on the ordinary mirror lepton mixing angles by a factor of 50 making predictions for mirror lepton production at HERA undetectably small. A way out is to allow for different mixing angles of the L and ...

A hyperbolic parametrization of lepton mixing for small Ue3

We use hyperbolic functions to parametrize lepton mixing matrix using only one input parameter φ. This matrix has three mixing angles as outputs therefore giving two predictions. In particular it predicts Ue3 = 0 besides predicting correct solar and atmospheric mixing. We confine us to real φ. For complex φ mixing matrix is no longer unitary. Next we accentuate this unitary mixing matrix with a...

Symmetries and fermion masses

We discuss whether quark, charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixing angles may be related by an extended flavour and family symmetry group. We show that current measurements of all fermion masses and mixing angles are consistent with a combination of an underlying SU(3) family symmetry together with a GUT symmetry such as SO(10). In this the near bi-maximal mixing observed in the neutrino s...

Fermion Masses and Mixing Angles from SU (3) Family Symmetry and Unification

We develop a bottom-up approach to constructing a theory of fermion masses and mixing angles based on the gauge group SU(3) × G where SU(3) is a family symmetry and G contains a unified group such as SO(10) or its Pati-Salam subgroup, together with other discrete symmetries. We construct a realistic model and show that it can provide an excellent description of quark and lepton masses and mixin...

Two-particle scattering on the lattice: Phase shifts, spin-orbit coupling, and mixing angles

We determine two-particle scattering phase shifts and mixing angles for quantum theories defined with lattice regularization. The method is suitable for any nonrelativistic effective theory of point particles on the lattice. In the center-of-mass frame of the two-particle system we impose a hard spherical wall at some fixed large radius. For channels without partial-wave mixing the partial-wave...
